History part 2

Mr Fred Whiting OBE was in at the start of the club back in 1961,
and is still connected with the club as our Life President. Here
are some of his memories of those early days...

Tintagel SLSC
1961 .... A group, helped by the Bude SLSC started the club. I
was the first
Chairman - and remained so for many years.
Pam Inman took on the secretaryship, she is married now and lives
in Camelford.
Also a founder member was David Matthews, the Tintagel village
Policeman.
He lived where the Country Club was until recently, but passed
away some time ago.
Harry Lines came to train us and became the first Lifeguard at
Trebarwith Strand.
The first winter we met in Tintagel Social Hall for "keep
fit" evenings.
Our first headquarters was a hut where the toilets are now.
During the 1960's the Camelford Rural District Council built the
toilets at Trebarwith and gave the club free use of the room above,
which the club is still using.
We provided Beach Safety patrols and members were trained for the
Surf Life Saving Bronze Medallion to do this, and when paid Lifeguards
came along, provided them as well.
Richard Whiting was the first to be an official lifeguard. His
sister, Carole got a
bronze medal as well. Roy Crosley, who was Head Teacher at St Teath
school, became secretary and got our organisation properly working.
Later on, Les Freke was Club Captain - then secretary, and he can
carry on the
more recent history.
In the 1990's another Whiting - Matthew (my Grandson) got his Bronze
medal and was employed as a lifeguard.
I then became the Life President of the club - a position which
I treasure highly...
Fred
